During the media breifing in New Zealand, MEA Secratery (East) Rudrendra Tandon was aksed why the PM had not intereaction with the media in his visit. First, Tandon responds saying that it won't be appropriate for him as a civil servant of India to comment on PM Modi's approach to politics.

While discussing PM Modi's style of interaction the citizens, Tandon said that PM Modi is actually "quintessential Indian politician", who belives in direct connecting with the voters.

"Prime Minister Modi is a quintessential Indian politician. By and large, Indian politicians favour direct contact with their electorate," he said.

He also added that Indian voters are mainly rural and they preferes interacting with leaders directly rather than getting intermediaters. "And you must remember that the Indian electorate are predominantly rural folk. They want direct contact. They don't like being spoken down to, they don't like being spoken to through intermediaries," Tandon said.

MEA Secratery said PM Modi has adopted this style of communication and it has been successful in his throughout political career.

"And Mr. Modi has perfected the art of direct contact with his electorate, and he seems to be doing a rather good job of it, since you know, he's been elected now, he's in his third term, he's one of the longest-serving Prime Ministers in our country," he added.

Indo-Pacific Cooperation A Key Focus Of New Zealand Visit

While talking about the purpose of PM Modi's visit to New Zealand, Tandon said strengthening the relation in Indo-Pacific has been major priority for India and New Zealand has been an important parter in promoting rules-based regional order.

"The purpose of this visit is to strengthen the rule-based Indo-Pacific order. One of the reasons we look at New Zealand as a significant partner in this part of the world is because of our joint quest for strengthening the rule-based order in the Indo-Pacific, which is very important for India as an Indian Ocean nation," he said.

This comes after the some similar kind of question was asked during PM Modi visit to Oslo in May. At that time, during the joint media interaction with Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Store, the media asked Why PM Modi didn't take questions from media referring to World Press Freedom Index rankings of India and Norway.

At that time, MEA Secratary (West) Sibi George defended PM Modi and India's stance. "We hear a lot of people asking why this, why that, but let me tell you this. We are one sixth of the total population of the world, but not one sixth of the problems of the world," George had said.
