Jaishankar Holds Bilateral Talks, Commissions Rescue Centre with Sri Lanka
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently visited Sri Lanka to hold talks with the country's top leadership, including President Ranil Wickremesinghe. During the visit, Jaishankar and Wickremesinghe jointly commissioned the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, which was built with a USD 6 million grant from India. The discussions between the two leaders focused on various areas of bilateral cooperation, including power, energy, connectivity, port infrastructure, aviation, digital technology, health, food security, education, and tourism.The meeting provided an opportunity to review and accelerate progress in the multifaceted partnership between India and Sri Lanka. One of the key areas of discussion was the Vision Document adopted by Wickremesinghe and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the president's visit to India in July 2023. The discussions added momentum to ongoing projects and initiatives aimed at promoting connectivity in all its dimensions.Following the meeting, Jaishankar and Wickremesinghe virtually handed over houses built under two housing projects funded by India. A total of 48 houses were handed over in Colombo and Trincomalee under the Model Village Housing Project, while 106 houses were handed over in three up-country estates under Phase III of the Indian Housing Project.In addition to the housing projects, Jaishankar and Wickremesinghe jointly unveiled the virtual plaque for the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. This centre, established with an Indian grant of USD 6 million, serves as a nerve centre for search and rescue operations at sea. It includes installations at various locations in Sri Lanka and underscores the deepening maritime security cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.During his visit, Jaishankar also met with Prime Minister Gunawardena and Foreign Minister M U M Ali Sabry. They discussed initiatives aimed at enhancing energy connectivity and developing the renewable energy sector. The discussions also covered plans for a Liquified Natural Gas supply, a proposed petroleum pipeline linking the two countries, and advancing oil and gas exploration projects.Jaishankar's visit to Sri Lanka highlights India's commitment to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy and the Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision. India aims to develop friendly and mutually beneficial relations with all its neighbors, with a focus on sustainable and equitable growth in the Indian Ocean Region.Overall, Jaishankar's visit to Sri Lanka further strengthens the close and friendly ties between the two countries. The discussions and initiatives undertaken during the visit pave the way for enhanced cooperation in various sectors, contributing to the growth and prosperity of both nations.
