The Iranian diplomats arrived at the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday. The MEA is yet to announce what it conveyed to Iran's deputy Chief of Missionin the meeting.

In a major escalation of the conflict in West Asia on Monday, the Iranian cruise missiles targeted the UAE's national tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah on the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, within Omani territorial waters, PTI reported citing a statement from UAE Ministry of Defence.

"The attack also caused material damage to both tankers as a result of the fires that broke out on board, which have since been brought under control," the statement added.

Calling it 'blatant attack', the UAE has considered it a 'serious violation and a clear breach of international law' and condemned the incident. It noted that the UAE remains on the 'highest level of readiness and preparedness' to address any threats.

'The UAE reserves its full right to respond to this escalation and to take all necessary measures to protect its territory, its citizens and residents,' The UAE Ministry of Defence said.

US Hits Iran

The US on Tuesday launched targeted strikes on Iran following President Donald Trump's announcement that Washington would reinstate a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and may charge foreign vessels for safe passage. Tehran retaliated quickly, launching attacks against Bahrain and Jordan, while also striking two UAE-linked tankers.

The escalating West Asia conflict has taken a devastating toll on Indian citizens, with 11 nationals confirmed dead so far. Last month, three Indian sailors were killed during a US strike on the Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello.
