From 'Diplomatic Tightrope' To 'Significant Wartime Visit': Foreign Media On PM Modi's Ukraine Trip
Prime Minister Narendra Modi used a historic visit to Kyiv on Friday to call for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since its independence in 1991.
During a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, PM Modi said, "We have stayed away from the war with great conviction. This does not mean that we were indifferent. We were not neutral from day one, we have taken a side, and we stand firmly for peace."

PM Modi's Ukraine visit, following a recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, has garnered major international attention.
The New York Times headlined the visit as, "Indian Leader Visits Kyiv as Ukraine Pushes Diplomacy," highlighting the complex dynamics of India's strategic ties with Russia, particularly concerning its oil purchases.
The White House welcomed the visit, recognising India's potential role in fostering a diplomatic settlement.
The BBC described the visit as a "diplomatic tightrope," noting the delicate balance PM Modi must maintain, especially after his recent engagement with Putin.
The network observed that this visit might be seen as an attempt to appease both Zelenskyy and Western leaders, reflecting India's independent foreign policy stance.
"India's famed non-alignment approach to geopolitics has served it well for decades," the report remarked.
The Washington Post focused on PM Modi's offer to act as "a friend" in bringing peace to Ukraine, calling his trip the most significant wartime visit by a leader from a neutral nation.
However, the paper included a cautionary note from a Ukrainian analyst who described the visit as "just the beginning of a complex dialogue between India, Ukraine, and Europe."
Politico.EU highlighted Zelenskyy's call for India to support Ukraine's pursuit of a "just peace," while noting the challenges posed by India's key economic ties with Russia.
The report also mentioned India's recent participation in a peace summit in Switzerland, where India's nuanced stance was evident as it refrained from endorsing the final communiqué.
The Moscow Times provided a more critical perspective, suggesting that while PM Modi's visit could be seen as a gesture of support for Ukraine, it must be viewed in light of India's ongoing trade relations with Russia, despite Western sanctions on Moscow.
The paper recalled Modi's recent trip to Russia and his close ties with Putin, describing it as "a move widely seen as him thumbing his nose at the free world."
