This hack came into light after the hacker send messages to several people on the contact list that sked for money. In one of such contacts was a NDTV journalist Ali Abbas Naqvi who received a message from Patra's whatsapp and the hacker was asking to send him Rs 55,000.

Interestingly the hacker also shared a QR code with the journalist which identified as Jagdish Paswan for the payment.

Well, the journalist played well and asked the hacker to pay the amount in person, the sender reportedly refused and kept insisting to pay online.

Sambit Patra Confirms Account Was Hacked

Patra later confirmed the incident through a post on X. He said his WhatsApp account had been hacked and that fraudsters were sending misleading messages from his number to seek money from his contacts.

He clarified that the messages had no connection with him and described them as part of a cybercrime.

He also said he had informed senior Odisha Police officials about the incident and advised everyone not to reply to messages received from his WhatsApp account or transfer any money until the issue is resolved.

Not just Sambit Patra but other famous personalities have also faced such incident.
Earlier, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule and actor Swara Bhasker also reported that their WhatsApp accounts had been compromised.

Last year, BJP leader Dinesh Chand Sharma faced a similar incident when fraudsters allegedly used his hacked WhatsApp account to send money requests to thousands of people in his contact list.

What to Do If Your WhatsApp Gets Hacked

The moment one knows that your WhatsApp is hacked, log back into the app immediately with your registered mobile number and this will immediately log out from any unauthorised user.

You should also inform your contacts through another platform or your WhatsApp status so they do not respond to any requests for money.

Users can report the incident to WhatsApp by contacting its support team and should also file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) or the National Cyber Crime Portal.
