Five arrested in Australia for alleged terror attack on an Anzac Day ceremony

Melbourne, April 18: At least five people were arrested in Australia on Saturday in an operation carried out by counter terrorism police, media reported.

They were arrested from Melbourne while planning an Islamic State-inspired terrorist attack next week at an event to mark the centenary of the landings at Gallipoli during World War one or an Anzac Day ceremony.

Three of the five men arrested were injured in the operation. One suffered a head wound and another resisted arrest, Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

This morning's operation involved 200 police officers and was the culmination of Operation Rising.

Anti-terrorism raids were also carried out by Australian police in Melbourne and Sydney in September and December last year. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and the Australian Federal Police raised the national terror threat level from "medium" to "high" in September.

Anzac Day is observed on 25 April to mark the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. It is one of Australia's most important national occasion.

Anzac stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
