Mariyappan Thangavelu Reflects On Paris Paralympics: Secured Bronze, Eyes Gold For 2028

In an emotional and introspective interview with OI Tamil, following the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Mariyappan Thangavelu, the celebrated Indian para-athlete, shared his reflections on his performance and future aspirations.

Known for his remarkable achievements in the high jump, Thangavelu won bronze in the men's high jump T63 class at the recent Games, adding to his illustrious career which includes gold at Rio 2016 and silver at Tokyo 2020.

Mariyappan Thangavelu Eyes Gold For 2028

"I was keen to win gold in Paris," Thangavelu stated. "I worked very hard for it. Although I'm not sure how I missed out on the top spot, I'm still happy with the bronze medal." Despite his disappointment, Thangavelu remains optimistic and resolute about his future goals. "Winning three medals across three Paralympics is an incredible achievement. I am determined to participate in the 2028 Paralympics and will work tirelessly to secure the gold medal then."

Before heading to Paris, Thangavelu had met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where he promised to return with a gold medal. Although he fell short of this promise, he expressed his gratitude for the support he received. "I want to thank the Sports Ministry, the Paralympic Committee, Chief Minister MK Stalin, and Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Udhayanidhi for their unwavering support," Thangavelu said.

Mariyappan Thangavelu's Coach Praises Him

His coach, Sathyanarayana, also shared his thoughts on the outcome. "Mariyappan trained very hard for this event. While he missed out on gold, he has still achieved a bronze medal. We are incredibly proud of him for winning medals in three consecutive Paralympics and becoming the first Indian to do so," Sathyanarayana remarked. He also highlighted the support from the Tamil Nadu government, noting that Thangavelu was granted a Group 1 job, a significant honour that underscores the recognition of his contributions and achievements.

Thangavelu's accomplishments have made him a role model for many young athletes. Coach Sathyanarayana concluded, "Mariyappan's achievements inspire the younger generation, and I am confident that he will win the gold medal at the 2028 Paralympics." As Thangavelu continues his journey, his resilience and dedication remain a source of inspiration, promising an exciting future in the world of para-athletics.
