Mumbai Train Rush: Railways Ask Offices To Shift Timings—Check If Your Workplace Is On The Congested Route
In a renewed push to tackle overcrowding on Mumbai's suburban rail network, Central Railway has reached out to more than 800 offices-including government departments, corporate firms, banks, educational institutions, and municipal bodies-urging them to alter or stagger their work timings. The aim is to reduce intense rush-hour congestion on the city's lifeline: local trains.
The appeal is focused primarily on the high-traffic windows of 8-10 AM and 5-7 PM, particularly along the heavily used CSMT-Thane corridor, where approximately 35 lakh passengers commute daily via 1,810 services. The move comes in response to growing safety concerns. Between January and May 2025, 922 people lost their lives in railway-related accidents. Disturbingly, 210 of these deaths were due to commuters falling from overcrowded trains.

Central Railway officials believe staggering work hours could significantly alleviate this pressure, allowing for a more even distribution of passengers throughout the day. They argue that this approach is crucial, especially as Mumbai's urban constraints make expanding railway infrastructure nearly impossible in key areas.
Despite the urgency, the response has been limited. So far, only 46 establishments-mostly small firms with fewer than 25 staff-have agreed to implement flexible work timings, reducing the immediate impact of the initiative. Central Railway has now taken to social media platforms to amplify its message and reinforce the need for large-scale cooperation.
This isn't the first time such a request has been made. Letters had been issued earlier as well, but a spike in fatal incidents has prompted the administration to reiterate the appeal. Officials stress that meaningful decongestion can only happen if large organizations come on board, helping to create a safer and more manageable daily commute for millions of Mumbai residents.
