NTSB Reports on Fatal Wyoming Highway Tunnel Crashes and Fire Initiated by Pickup Truck Incident

A tragic series of crashes and a subsequent fire in a Wyoming highway tunnel claimed three lives, according to federal investigators. The incident began when a pickup truck lost control on the slippery road, partially blocking traffic. This occurred on February 14 along Interstate 80, near Green River, Wyoming, following snowfall that left the road wet and possibly icy.

NTSB Investigates Fatal Wyoming Tunnel Crashes

As vehicles exited the tunnel, they attempted to avoid the stationary Toyota pickup. A tractor trailer jackknifed, obstructing both lanes about 200 feet from the tunnel's exit. A Dodge pickup then collided with this trailer, followed by another tractor trailer hitting the Dodge. This second trailer, entangled with the Dodge, struck the jackknifed trailer again before colliding with the Toyota and another truck outside the tunnel.

Chain-Reaction Collisions

Inside the tunnel, several more vehicles crashed, leading to a fire post-collision. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that two individuals in the Dodge pickup succumbed to their injuries. Additionally, a tractor trailer driver trapped inside his vehicle perished in the fire.

The crash site was located in the westbound tube of a twin tunnel beneath Castle Rock, a prominent sandstone formation near Green River. The NTSB's preliminary report highlights how treacherous road conditions contributed to this devastating event.

Impact and Casualties

The incident resulted in injuries to 20 other individuals with varying severity. The NTSB continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding these chain-reaction crashes to determine further details and potential safety measures.

The initial crash sequence began when a Toyota pickup spun out after exiting the tunnel, striking a guardrail and obstructing traffic lanes. This set off a series of collisions involving multiple vehicles trying to navigate the hazardous conditions.

The tragic events underscore the dangers posed by adverse weather conditions on highways. Authorities are likely to review safety protocols and consider improvements to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
