Ukraine Employs US-Supplied Arms for Defensive Actions Inside Russia
Recent developments have emerged regarding the use of US weapons by Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. A US senator and a Western official have disclosed that American arms have been deployed inside Russia in the past few days. This action aligns with newly approved guidelines from President Joe Biden, which permit the use of these weapons within Russian territory solely for the defense of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city.

The decision to allow such military actions comes amidst increased assaults on Kharkiv, located merely 20 km (12 miles) from the Russian border. The city has faced intensified attacks from Russian forces, highlighting the strategic significance of this area in the conflict. The Western official, who chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the information, and Republican Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota, a Senate Armed Services Committee member, both confirmed these strikes. However, specific details on how Senator Rounds was informed about these operations were not disclosed.
It is important to note that this directive does not alter the existing US policy which advises Ukraine against using American-supplied ATACMS or long-range missiles for offensive operations inside Russia. This stance underscores the cautious approach the US is taking to avoid escalating tensions further.
The use of US weapons by Ukrainian forces comes after calls from Ukrainian officials for more robust defensive capabilities against Russian aggression. The strategic importance of Kharkiv and its proximity to Russia makes it a critical point of contention in the conflict.
Despite these developments, White House national security spokesman John Kirby stated on Tuesday that he could not confirm Ukraine's use of US weapons against targets in Russia. Kirby emphasized the challenges in monitoring the specifics of military engagements on a day-to-day basis.
A report from the Institute for the Study of War dated June 3 highlighted a significant operation where Ukrainian forces targeted a Russian S-300/400 air defense battery in the Belgorod region. This strike, likely executed with High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), occurred on June 1 or June 2. The targeted air defense system was situated approximately 60 km (about 40 miles) from the current frontline in the Kharkiv region and over 80 km (50 miles) from Kharkiv city itself, well within HIMARS' operational range.
In related news, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently visited Qatar for discussions with its ruling emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Their talks focused on potential strategies to halt hostilities, safeguard civilians, and maintain open communication channels for crisis resolution through dialogue and diplomatic efforts.
Senator Rounds expressed his support for Biden's decision to permit limited strikes against Russian forces using US weapons. He emphasized the necessity of such actions to prevent further harm in Ukraine.
This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, reflecting both the international community's efforts to manage the situation and the complexities involved in providing military aid during such crises.
