Severe Turbulence Forces Delta Airlines Flight to Emergency Landing, Injuring 25 Passengers

The incident sent 25 individuals to hospitals, according to the airline. Passengers not wearing seat belts were thrown around the cabin during the turbulence, as described by Leann Clement-Nash to ABC News. "They hit the ceiling, and then they fell to the ground," she said. "And the carts also hit the ceiling and fell to the ground, and people were injured. It happened several times, so it was really scary."

The Airbus A330-900 carried 275 passengers and a 13-member crew on Wednesday evening. Upon landing, airport fire services and paramedics attended to those injured. Delta stated that seven crew members received hospital treatment and were later discharged. Some passengers were also treated and released, though exact numbers weren't provided.

Turbulence Incidents Raise Safety Concerns

In-flight turbulence injuries are uncommon but may be increasing due to climate change affecting jet streams. This year has seen multiple turbulence-related incidents, highlighting aviation safety concerns. In January, a midair collision over Washington, DC, resulted in 67 fatalities. March saw a plane overturning during a crash in Toronto.

Recent incidents include a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Singapore encountering severe turbulence over the Philippines in March. The flight had 174 passengers and 14 crew members; five were injured but landed safely in Singapore. Similarly, turbulence forced several flights to divert to Waco, Texas, on March 3.

Delta's Response and Investigation

Delta arranged for passengers from the affected flight to continue their journey on a special Thursday evening flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport to Amsterdam. The airline is cooperating with a National Transportation Safety Board investigation into the incident.

In June, an American Airlines flight from Miami faced turbulence en route to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, leading to five hospital evaluations after landing safely. Earlier that month, severe weather in southern Germany caused a Ryanair flight from Berlin to Milan to make an emergency landing due to violent turbulence injuring nine people.

A Singapore Airlines flight experienced severe turbulence in May 2024, resulting in one fatality—the first such death on a major airline in decades. This incident underscores the potential dangers of turbulence despite its rarity.

Delta's recent turbulence incident adds to this year's list of similar events, emphasizing the need for continued focus on aviation safety measures as climate patterns evolve.
