Spain: 2-yr-old boy trapped in borewell yet to be rescued

Madrid, Jan 21: It's almost a week now and the authorities have yet not succeeded in bringing out the toddler that fell inside a dry borehole while going out for picnic with its parents. Hope about rescuing the child alive is fading fast with time and now the rescuers have started drilling to reach the boy, the Guardian reported.

Public support and sympathy have poured in for the kid's family even as authorities have matched the tough ask of bringing heavy equipment to a difficult terrain and reaching the child safely.

"We are incredibly motivated to reach him as soon as possible. We're not bothered by the hours, the tiredness or the lack of sleep," Ángel Vidal, the lead engineer overseeing the rescue, said on Saturday, January 19, adding that they were hopeful about reaching the boy as fast as possible and return him to his parents. The father of the boy was recently seen distraught over the accident.

The boy, Julen Roselló, fell into the borewhole measuring just 10 inches in width and 100 metres deep while walking through a private estate in Totalan, Málaga, a port city in southern Spain. There was no confirmation of the boy still alive but the officials were working against the odds. Video footage taken by firefighters and released on Canal Sur, a Spanish broadcaster, showed a blockage around 70 metres into the well which prevented efforts to reach food or water to the trapped kid.

This is not the first time that the boy's parents experienced a tragedy. Two years ago, their three-year-old son died of health ailments while walking on a beach.
