Pulitzer Prizes Awarded to Leading Newspapers for Impactful Journalism in 2023

The New York Times and The Washington Post each received three Pulitzer Prizes on Monday for their work in 2023, covering topics such as the war in Gaza and gun violence. The Associated Press (AP) won in the feature photography category for its coverage of global migration to the US. The prestigious public service award went to ProPublica for reporting on the US Supreme Court's secrecy and the influence of billionaires on justices.
AP's winning entry features 15 photos of global migration
The 15 photos in AP's winning entry were taken across Latin America and along the US-Mexico border in Texas and California. They document migrants at every step of their treacherous journeys. The United States has seen more than 10 million border arrivals in the last five years, with migrants arriving from a wide range of new locations like Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti, and Africa.
The New York Times and The Washington Post win multiple awards
In citing the Times for its work in Israel and Gaza, the Pulitzer board mentioned its coverage of the country's intelligence failures, along with the attack and Israel's military response. The Times also won Pulitzers in investigative reporting and feature writing. The Washington Post staff won in national reporting for its examination of the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. Its other awards were for editorial writing and commentaries written from a Russian prison cell.
Other Pulitzer Prize winners include The New Yorker and Lookout Santa Cruz
The New Yorker magazine won two Pulitzers for explanatory reporting and illustrated reporting and commentary. Lookout Santa Cruz in California won in the breaking news category for its coverage of flooding and mudslides. The Pulitzers also gave a second award in national reporting to Reuters staff for a series that probed Elon Musk's automobile and aerospace businesses.
Pulitzer Prizes open eligibility to broadcast and audio companies
For the first time, the Pulitzers opened eligibility to broadcast and audio companies that also operate digital news sites, such as CNN, NPR, and the broadcast networks ABC, CBS, and NBC. However, none of these companies won this year. The prizes were established in the will of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer and first awarded in 1917.
