PM Modi Commemorates Mahatma Gandhi's Legacy During First Visit to Guyana in Over 50 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at a statue located in the historic Promenade Gardens. This visit marks the first by an Indian head of state to Guyana in over five decades. During his visit, Modi remembered Gandhi's timeless teachings of peace and non-violence.

PM Modi Pays Tribute to Gandhi in Guyana

Modi's itinerary included a visit to the Indian Arrival Monument at Monument Gardens, where he honoured the Indian heritage in Guyana. He reflected on the struggles and contributions of the Indian diaspora to Guyana's nation-building. As a gesture of respect, Modi planted a Bel patra sapling at the site.

The prime minister also visited Saraswati Vidya Niketan School, recalling his visit there over 20 years ago. He praised Swami Akasharananda ji and his team for instilling traditional Indian values and culture in students, which contributes to their holistic education.

Strengthening India-Guyana Relations

During his stay, Modi participated in a Ram Bhajan recitation at the Arya Samaj monument. He also laid flowers at this monument, which was unveiled in 2011 to mark 100 years of the Arya Samaj movement in Guyana.

In a historic moment, Modi addressed a special session of Guyana's National Assembly. He is the first Indian leader to do so. In his speech, he expressed gratitude to the government and people of Guyana for their warm welcome.

The prime minister highlighted the importance of shared histories and democratic traditions between India and Guyana. He emphasised that these commonalities help strengthen ties between the two nations.

Randhir Jaiswal, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, shared on X about Modi's homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Promenade Gardens. In another post, Jaiswal mentioned Modi's tribute to Indian heritage at Monument Gardens.

Modi's visit underscores India's commitment to fostering closer relations with Guyana. His engagements reflect mutual respect and recognition of historical connections between both countries.

This visit not only commemorates historical ties but also paves the way for future collaborations. The focus remains on enhancing diplomatic relations through shared values and cultural exchanges.
