Justice Department and FBI Establish Task Force to Investigate Hamas Following October 7 Attack
The Justice Department has initiated a task force to probe Hamas for its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. This group, known as Joint Task Force October 7 (JTF 10-7), will also examine potential civil rights violations and antisemitism linked to Hamas supporters. The task force aims to charge those directly involved in the violence in southern Israel.

The attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and led to 251 hostages being taken by Hamas. In response, Israel launched a counteroffensive that devastated large parts of Gaza. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, over 48,000 Palestinians have died, mainly women and children. However, the ministry did not specify how many were combatants.
Task Force Objectives and Legal Actions
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, "The barbaric Hamas terrorists will not win — and there will be consequences." The task force will also handle pending charges against Hamas leaders like Yahya Sinwar. Although Sinwar was killed by Israeli forces weeks after the attack, the charges remain significant symbolically. The Justice Department had previously unsealed charges against Sinwar and other militants last September.
President Donald Trump has issued a "last warning" to Hamas to release hostages still held in Gaza. His administration has criticized universities for not adequately addressing antisemitism on campuses and has targeted foreigners involved in pro-Palestinian protests. Recently, the Justice Department began investigating Columbia University for allegedly concealing "illegal aliens."
Investigations into Civil Rights Violations
Federal immigration agents have detained Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and Columbia graduate student. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked Khalil's permission to stay in the US due to his involvement in pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia. Rubio claimed these protests incited "anti-Jewish" sentiment and supported Hamas. Khalil's lawyers are contesting his detention in court.
The task force will also scrutinize civil rights violations and possible terrorism acts by those supporting or funding Hamas. While it did not specify what constitutes illegal support, federal law prohibits providing material support to designated foreign terrorist organisations like Hamas. FBI agents will collaborate with Israel's National Bureau of Counter Terror Finance as part of this effort.
The announcement underscores the US government's commitment to addressing terrorism and antisemitism linked to Hamas activities. The task force's formation highlights ongoing efforts to hold accountable those responsible for violence and ensure justice for affected communities.
