Israeli Troops Retake Netzarim Corridor in Gaza as Military Actions Intensify
Israeli forces have reclaimed a section of the Netzarim Corridor in Gaza, intensifying military actions until Hamas releases hostages and relinquishes control. The corridor, which divides northern and southern Gaza, was previously vacated by Israel under a ceasefire agreement in January. However, recent Israeli airstrikes have ended this truce, resulting in over 400 Palestinian casualties, primarily women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The United Nations reported that one of its employees was killed and five others injured in a strike on a guesthouse in Gaza. The UN has not identified the responsible party. Jorge Moreira da Silva from the UN Office for Project Services stated that the strike was deliberate and unrelated to demining activities. He confirmed that Israel was informed about the UN presence at the site.
Israel's Military Strategy in Gaza
Israel's military has launched a "limited ground operation" aimed at creating a buffer zone between northern and southern Gaza. This move raises questions about whether it will restrict Palestinian movement through the Netzarim Corridor. The corridor, spanning approximately 6 kilometres, served as a military zone during previous conflicts.
Despite ongoing airstrikes targeting militants and their sites, including a Hamas battalion command centre, Israel denies hitting the UN guesthouse. Fares Awad from the Gaza Health Ministry reported an Israeli strike on mourners in Beit Lahiya, resulting in 14 deaths and 30 injuries. The Israeli military has not commented on this incident.
Impact on Civilians
The recent escalation has led to significant civilian casualties. The Gaza Health Ministry reports at least 436 deaths since Tuesday's strikes began, including 183 children and 94 women. Additionally, 678 individuals have been injured. Israel maintains that its operations target militants and attributes civilian casualties to Hamas's presence in populated areas.
The conflict has resulted in nearly 49,000 Palestinian deaths and displaced 90% of Gaza's population. The Health Ministry notes that over half of those killed are women and children. The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.
Hostage Situation and Political Tensions
Within Israel, concerns grow over approximately two dozen hostages still held by Hamas. Defence Minister Israel Katz announced plans for new evacuations of Palestinians from combat zones. Katz stated that Tuesday's bombardment was just the beginning of efforts to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages and ceding control of Gaza.
Before this week's escalation, there were attempts to extend a six-week ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. However, negotiations stalled as Hamas demanded adherence to initial terms, including a full withdrawal from Gaza. Israel proposed extending the truce without ending the conflict but freeing more hostages.
The breakdown of the ceasefire has sparked protests in Israel against Prime Minister Netanyahu's handling of the hostage crisis and his plan to dismiss the head of internal security. Many Israelis support efforts to secure the release of hostages amid growing domestic pressure on Netanyahu's government.
