6.8-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts New Zealand’s Riverton Coast, No Tsunami Alert

Earthquake in New Zealand: A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Riverton, New Zealand, on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

6 8-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts New Zealand s Riverton Coast No Tsunami Alert

Initially, the USGS recorded the quake at magnitude 7, occurring at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) off the southwest tip of New Zealand's South Island. Despite the strong tremor, authorities have not issued a tsunami warning for the region.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation for potential aftershocks or any further developments.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake that struck off New Zealand's Riverton coast has triggered green alerts for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses, indicating a low likelihood of casualties or significant damage.

The USGS further noted that most structures in the quake-affected region are highly resistant to earthquakes, though some vulnerable buildings may be at risk.

Take a Poll

Meanwhile, New Zealand's emergency management agency stated that it is assessing whether the earthquake has generated a tsunami that could impact the country. In a national advisory, the agency mentioned, "If a tsunami has been generated in this location, it is not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least one hour."

New Zealand has a history of devastating earthquakes. The 2011 Christchurch earthquake of magnitude 6.3 resulted in 185 fatalities.

The USGS highlights that the eastern margin of the Australian plate is one of the most seismically active regions globally due to the high convergence rates between the Australian and Pacific plates. The 3,000 km-long Australia-Pacific plate boundary extends from south of Macquarie Island to the southern Kermadec Island chain.

Since 1900, 15 earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 or higher have been recorded near New Zealand, with nine of these, including the four largest ones, occurring near the Macquarie Ridge. The most powerful was the 8.2-magnitude earthquake in 1989 on the Macquarie Ridge.

New Zealand's deadliest earthquake remains the 7.8-magnitude Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931, which claimed 256 lives.
