Voices From The Valley: Kashmiri Pandits Demand Concrete Action From Political Parties
As the upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir draw near, the Kashmiri Pandit community is voicing its deep-seated concerns and hopes. Despite facing immense hardship, including exodus and targeted killings, this community is looking to the new government to address their long-standing issues.

Chaman Lal Mothu, an 80-year-old Kashmiri Pandit and temple manager, shared his perspective with Oneindia. Although he has received personal security and accommodation from the central government since 1990, Mothu is critical of the lack of tangible progress. "Many promises have been made, but nothing has been practically achieved," he said. "Political parties often use Kashmiri Pandits as a political tool during elections but discard them afterward." Mothu believes that while political parties claim to prioritise the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley, their promises are rarely fulfilled.
Mahaveer, another Kashmiri Pandit, expressed frustration over being treated as a vote bank. "I have seen many governments come and go, but no one has taken our problems seriously," he remarked. "If God wills, perhaps we will rise, but it is very difficult." He emphasized that the solution to bringing Kashmiri Pandits back to their homeland lies beyond mere political promises and requires serious, actionable plans.
Babloo Bhat, a retired government employee and temple manager for 19 years, echoed similar sentiments. Bhat, who has returned to his roots after decades away, highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the community. "I am grateful to be back, but much work remains to be done," he stated. "I urge the government to address these issues seriously."
As Jammu and Kashmir prepares for elections in October, the question remains whether the new government will move beyond rhetoric to ensure the safe and dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits to their homeland. The community's hope is that this time, their concerns will translate into real action and change.
