TMC Leaders Detained Outside EC Office, Pledge to Persist with Dharna at Police Station

In a significant political development, several leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were detained by the Delhi Police on Monday. The detention occurred as they staged a protest outside the Election Commission's (EC) office, demanding a change in leadership at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), National Investigation Agency (NIA), Enforcement Directorate (ED), and Income-Tax Department. The TMC alleges these bodies are influenced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre.

TMC Leaders Protest Leads to Detention

The detained TMC leaders, including notable figures such as Derek O'Brien, Mohammed Nadimul Haque, and Dola Sen, declared their intention to continue their protest at the Mandir Marg police station. This move came after their initial demonstration aimed at urging the EC for a fair playing field in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and to halt what they perceive as the misuse of central agencies against opposition parties.

In Kolkata, a TMC delegation led by MP Abhishek Banerjee met with Governor C V Ananda Bose to voice their grievances regarding the detention. Banerjee criticized the Delhi Police's actions as a "murder of democracy." Despite their release, as confirmed by a senior police officer, the TMC leaders vowed to persist with their protest within or outside the police station premises.

The EC has refrained from commenting on the TMC's demonstration. Meanwhile, in Kolkata, Banerjee's delegation lodged a formal complaint against what they describe as an assault on democracy, directly implicating the EC rather than the BJP or law enforcement agencies under its control.

This incident has sparked controversy ahead of the Lok Sabha polls scheduled between April 19 and June 1, with vote counting set for June 4. The TMC has previously accused central agencies of bias towards opposition parties, citing an alleged meeting between BJP leader Jitendra Tiwari and NIA Superintendent D R Singh as evidence of collusion. The NIA has denied these allegations, describing them as unfortunate and asserting no mala-fide intentions.

The political landscape is charged with tension as these events unfold, highlighting the deep divisions and accusations of unfair practices leading up to one of India's most crucial electoral exercises.
