Ram Jethmalani, Salman Khurshid failed; now Subramanian Swamy to fight for Asaram Bapu

Jodhpur, May 25: Senior and well-known advocates, such as Ram Jethmalani, Salman Khurshid had tried to get him bail, but luck was not in Asaram Bapu's favour. Asaram, the self-proclaimed godman, has been lodged in jail for over 18 months.

Now, finally he might have seen a ray of hope as Subramanian Swamy, the leading lawyer and BJP leader, promised the former to get him bail. Swamy on May 23 moved a trial court in Jodhpur, Rajasthan with a bail application on behalf of Asaram.

While on May 23, Swamy's assistant appeared in the court as his representative, the senior lawyer himself would appear before the court to to argue on the bail application on May 26.

Swamy earlier on April 23 had come to Jodhpur where he met Asaram at Jodhpur Central Jail. According to sources, the BJP leader compared Asaram's case with politicians such as Lalu Prasad Yadav and Jayalalithaa. The two politicians, who were found guilty in different cases against them, got bail and were released from jail.

Speaking about Lalu and Jayalalithaa, Swamy earlier had said, "When they could be out of jail despite being convicted, why could Asaram not be out of jail."

The BJP leader was also quoted as saying, "Bail is a fundamental right of Asaram and he would soon file a bail application in the lower court."

Asaram was accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl in his ashram near Jodhpur. Several other cases were filed against him. However, his son Narayan Sai, who too was arrested, has been given bail.
