Omar Abdullah Reviews Progress of Jal Jeevan Mission to Ensure Clean Water Supply in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently assessed the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission in the region. He stressed the importance of effective monitoring to meet the mission's goals. Abdullah assured that the government would fully support efforts to provide clean drinking water to every household in Jammu and Kashmir.

Omar Abdullah Reviews Jal Jeevan Mission Progress

The review meeting, led by Abdullah, focused on the Jal Shakti department's progress with the Jal Jeevan Mission. Various challenges were discussed, such as low tender responses and delays in supplying galvanised iron pipes in Jammu and ductile iron pipes in Kashmir. Dry bore wells in several districts were also noted as issues affecting project timelines.

Challenges and Solutions

Electro-mechanical problems were identified as significant hurdles impacting project completion. An official spokesperson stated that these issues need urgent attention to ensure timely execution. The mission aims to cover 3,253 schemes to establish a sustainable water supply system across the Union Territory.

Currently, 81% of households in Jammu and Kashmir have been connected to tap water under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Efforts are ongoing to reach the remaining households. Abdullah highlighted the necessity for robust third-party monitoring mechanisms to boost transparency and accountability in the mission's implementation.

Focus on Water Quality

The meeting also addressed water quality monitoring and surveillance. Abdullah emphasised strengthening Pani Samities at the panchayat level to ensure better oversight. He pointed out that addressing manpower shortages within the department is crucial for improving service delivery and achieving mission objectives.

Abdullah expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far under the Jal Jeevan Mission. However, he reiterated the need to maintain momentum and overcome existing challenges to meet all targets effectively.

Infrastructure Developments

In addition to reviewing the mission's progress, Abdullah inaugurated the newly-constructed Tawi state guest house. This facility marks a significant enhancement to Jammu and Kashmir's hospitality infrastructure. During his visit, Abdullah inspected various parts of the guest house, including VVIP suites, mini suites, bedrooms, a conference hall, and other amenities.

The chief minister's focus on both infrastructure development and essential services like water supply highlights a comprehensive approach to improving living standards in Jammu and Kashmir. By addressing challenges head-on and ensuring robust monitoring systems, Abdullah aims to fulfil the mission's vision of providing clean drinking water for all households in the region.
