Kumbh Mela Readies for Massive Turnout: Authorities Ensure Smooth Flow

The administration in Uttar Pradesh is preparing for a significant day at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, a religious festival that attracts millions of devotees. In light of a tragic stampede that resulted in the deaths of 30 individuals during the 'Amrit Snaan' (holy dip) last month, officials are implementing comprehensive safety protocols to ensure the well-being of attendees.

Turning Prayagraj into a No Vehicle Zone

As the Maghi Purnima Snan approaches-marking the conclusion of the Kalpvas period, a revered tradition that began on January 13-Prayagraj has been transformed into a 'no vehicle zone'. This period sees devotees residing near the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati River, engaging in fasting, self-discipline, and spiritual reflection. This year, over 1 million devotees have undertaken the Kalpvas, heightening the significance of the upcoming holy dip.

Robust Medical Arrangements

To safeguard the health of the devotees, a total of 133 ambulances are stationed on-site, with over 40 hospitals in Mahakumbhnagar on high alert. The medical infrastructure includes 125 ground ambulances, seven river ambulances, and one air ambulance. In a proactive measure, the local healthcare system has mobilized 2,000 medical personnel, alongside 700 staff members at Swarooprani Nehru Hospital (SRN), ensuring readiness for both minor and major medical emergencies.

Additionally, 200 blood units are available, and hospitals have reserved at least 250 beds, with a 500-bed capacity hospital prepared and staffed with 30 expert doctors and 150 medical personnel from the AYUSH Ministry. Experts from renowned institutions like AIIMS Delhi and Banaras Hindu University will also assist in providing care.

Crowd and Traffic Management Initiatives

With an expected turnout of 30 million devotees for the holy dip on this important day-the fifth significant bathing day of the Maha Kumbh-extensive crowd management and traffic control measures are in place. Heavy police presence is noted throughout the city, with the use of drones to oversee traffic flows.

The local authorities have prepared an array of measures akin to those established during the Mauni Amavasya on January 29, which saw the operation of 150 special trains. For Maghi Purnima, arrangements are in place for approximately 225 additional trains to accommodate the influx of devotees.

Traffic will be meticulously managed, with a special emergency evacuation plan ready should the need arise. The Mela area has been designated a no-vehicle zone from 4:00 AM, ensuring that only essential service vehicles can enter. The Prayagraj Police commissioner, Tarun Gauba, emphasized the use of AI technology in monitoring vehicle movements and the enforcement of strict parking regulations.

The tragic stampede of January 29, which left many injured and deceased, has prompted the government to enact 'Operation Eleven', focused on secure traffic management and crowd control for key bathing days. Measures include a designated one-way route for devotees and enhanced police presence to manage crowds at the Triveni ghats, thereby preventing future overcrowding.

As Prayagraj prepares for this monumental event, the dedication to improving safety and ensuring smooth operations reflects a profound commitment to the well-being of the countless individuals who flock to this sacred gathering, reinforcing the sanctity and significance of the Maha Kumbh.
