India Advocates for Dialogue, Skips Signing Swiss Summit Communique

India, on Sunday, opted out of signing a joint communique at a summit in Switzerland aimed at fostering peace in Ukraine, underscoring its stance that dialogue and diplomacy are the keys to resolving the conflict. The summit, held in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock, saw participation from over 100 countries and organizations, including several heads of state. Pavan Kapoor, Secretary West in the external affairs ministry, represented India at this significant gathering.

India Skips Swiss Summit Signing

Despite its active participation, India chose not to align with any communique or document produced at the summit's conclusion. This decision aligns with New Delhi's consistent approach advocating for a peaceful resolution through sincere talks between Moscow and Kyiv. The summit's primary goal was to set the stage for a future peace process, notably excluding Russia from the invitees and witnessing China's absence.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated India's commitment to facilitating a lasting peace through dialogue and diplomacy. This stance has been evident in India's engagement in various meetings leading up to the summit, all aimed at exploring Ukraine's Peace Formula. The MEA emphasized the necessity of genuine and practical engagement between the conflicting parties for a resolution.

India's unwavering belief in dialogue and diplomacy as the path to peace was further highlighted during Kapoor's remarks at the summit. This approach has been consistent even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in conversations with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

At the summit's closure, a joint communique was issued by 83 states and organizations, underscoring their commitment to sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity principles. However, India's decision not to sign reflects its nuanced position on the conflict, advocating for an inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy utilized the platform to seek support for his 10-point peace plan, emphasizing inclusivity and active participation from all regions of the world. This summit builds upon previous discussions centered around Ukraine's Peace Formula and other proposals aimed at achieving peace.

In a recent development on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy's Apulia, Prime Minister Modi met President Zelenskyy, reaffirming India's support for a peaceful resolution through dialogue. Modi emphasized a human-centric approach and reiterated India's readiness to support peace efforts within its capabilities.

India's stance at the Switzerland-hosted summit reflects its diplomatic approach towards an enduring peace in Ukraine through constructive dialogue and engagement among all involved parties.
