India to Eliminate Naxal Threat by 2026, Amit Shah Announces Strategy

India aims to eliminate Left Wing Extremism (LWE) by March 2026, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He stressed the need for a robust and uncompromising strategy to tackle this issue. Shah made these remarks during a press conference after reviewing the Maoist situation in Chhattisgarh with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and senior officials.

Indias Final Assault on Naxalism by 2026

Shah highlighted that Naxal violence poses a significant threat to democracy, having claimed around 17,000 lives over the past four decades. He noted that since the Narendra Modi-led government took office, it has been combating LWE through a comprehensive approach involving development, prosecution, and operations.

Decline in Naxal Incidents

The minister pointed out a notable 53% reduction in Naxal incidents from 2014-24 compared to the previous decade. He mentioned that states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh have successfully eradicated Naxalism, with Maharashtra being almost free except for Gadchiroli district.

In 2022, for the first time in four decades, deaths due to left-wing violence dropped below 100. Between 2004-14, there were 16,274 incidents of Naxal violence, which decreased to 7,696 during the next decade under Modi's rule. Similarly, deaths from Maoist violence fell from 6,568 to 1,990 in the same periods.

Strengthening Security Measures

Since 2019, 277 CRPF camps have been established in Naxal-affected areas to address security gaps. Shah also mentioned that central agencies like NIA and ED have been instrumental in dismantling Maoist finances. He praised the efforts of the Vishnu Deo Sai government in neutralising 179 Naxalites and arresting 559 since coming to power last year.

Shah announced that Chhattisgarh would soon introduce a new surrender policy for Naxals within one to two months. Additionally, a Special Investigation Agency (SIA) will be strengthened in Chhattisgarh, modelled after the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Development Initiatives

The home minister emphasised the dual objectives of establishing law and order in Naxal-affected regions and fostering development by gaining people's trust. He assured that the Centre is committed to developing these areas and urged Maoists to lay down their arms and join the mainstream.

Shah also mentioned plans to launch an educational campaign in Chhattisgarh for those who remained illiterate due to LWE. This initiative aims to uplift communities affected by extremism through education and development.

Political Stance on Key Issues

Addressing questions about NMDC steel plant privatisation in Bastar's Nagarnar area, Shah clarified that multiple employment opportunities exist beyond just the steel plant. On Article 370's restoration promise by NC and PDP in Jammu and Kashmir, he firmly stated that it would never be reinstated.

Regarding the delayed decadal census, Shah said it would be conducted at an appropriate time and details would be announced once decided. He also criticised Congress for its alliance with NC for upcoming Jammu and Kashmir elections, questioning their stance on Article 370 and reservations for Scheduled Castes, Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.

Amit Shah reiterated his belief that India will be free from Left Wing Extremism by March 2026. The ongoing efforts aim to ensure peace and development in affected regions while maintaining a strong stance against extremism.
