Fake Retired IPS Officer Anil Katiyal Sent to Jail for Threatening Ghaziabad DCP Staff
A man accused of impersonating a retired IPS officer and intimidating a deputy commissioner's staff to halt proceedings against his associate has been placed in judicial custody for 14 days. Sahibabad police apprehended Anil Katiyal, 68, who claimed to be a retired IPS officer from the 1979 Manipur cadre, along with his associate Vinod Kapoor, 69, from Delhi and Gurugram respectively.

Katiyal allegedly concealed his real identity to gain financial benefits and undue advantages, according to the police. Both individuals were presented before Chief Judicial Magistrate Jasvir Singh Yadav on Thursday, who ordered their imprisonment. The impersonator had threatened Neeraj Rathore, the Public Relation Officer of DCP Trans Hindon, leading Rathore to file an FIR against him at the Sahibabad police station.
Threats and False Claims
In the FIR, Rathore stated that on November 14, Katiyal contacted him via his official mobile number. Katiyal introduced himself as a retired IPS officer from the 1979 Manipur cadre and claimed to be an adviser in the Ministry of Home Affairs. He alleged that Indirapuram police had filed a false FIR against Vinod Kapoor and arrested him on October 1 in Haryana.
DCP Trans Hindan, Nimish Patil, revealed that during the call, Katiyal threatened Rathore with registering an FIR against Indirapuram police under Section 1401 for kidnapping or abducting with intent to murder or for ransom. Katiyal claimed that involved officers would face imprisonment for life. He allegedly pressured Rathore to cease proceedings against Kapoor.
Legal Actions and Charges
The police have filed an FIR against Katiyal and Kapoor under various sections including extortion, obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions, personating a public servant, and cheating. Patil mentioned that Kapoor also made similar threats to Sub-Inspector Pramod Hudda at Indirapuram police station.
The case highlights the lengths some individuals go to manipulate legal processes for personal gain. The authorities are taking stringent actions to ensure justice is served and such impersonations do not undermine law enforcement efforts.
