Hyderabad: Setback for Sonia Gandhi, Cong's Renuka Chowdhury booked for taking Rs 1.10 crore bribe

Hyderabad, March 21: In a major setback for Congress President Sonia Gandhi, a senior party leader Renuka Chowdhury has been booked by Hyderabad Police for allegedly taking bribe.

The Hyderabad Police on Saturday, March 21 informed that a case has been filed against Chowdhury as she has been accused of taking Rs 1.10 crore bribe.

The petitioner, who has been identified as B Kalawati, claimed that Chowdhury had taken the bribe ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha election. [Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury's shopping spree delays AI flight by 45 minutes]

The petitioner also said that the Congress leader allegedly had promised to give an election ticket to Kalawati's husband Ramjee Naik from Wyra Assembly.

However, Chowdhury did not help Kalawati's husband to get the election ticket from the assembly as it was promised by her, alleged petitioner.

Continuing her allegations against Chowdhury, Kalawati asserted that unable to take financial pressure, her husband died.

The petitioner and her husband reportedly had taken money from others in order to raise the money which allegedly was given to the Congress leader.

Media reports quoted Kalawati as saying, "She took more than Rs 1.10 crore but cheated us. We want justice and will take this matter to the court."

The case against Chowdhury, a former union minister, has been filed by police in Khammam district of Telangana under the SC/ST Atrocities Act.

Hyderabad Police registered the case following an order by Hyderabad High Court. Meanwhile, the Congress leader overruled all allegations against her.

Chowdhury claimed that she has never met or seen Kalawati. Official statement by Congress on the case is yet to be made.
