Budget 2024: Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor Gets Major Funding Boost

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a major investment package for the Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) in the Union Budget 2024.

The Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor, a crucial component of India's East Coast Economic Corridor (ECEC), is designed to strengthen the country's economic ties with Southeast Asia and East Asia. As India's first coastal corridor, VCIC is aligned with the Golden Quadrilateral and is central to the Act East Policy and Make in India initiative.

Spanning nearly 800 kilometers, the corridor will enhance connectivity and drive industrial growth across nine districts in Andhra Pradesh. The VCIC is expected to support the Andhra Pradesh government's efforts to boost industrial development and generate high-quality jobs in the region.

In a significant boost to infrastructure and development, Sitharaman has announced a series of major initiatives, including a substantial investment of Rs 15,000 crore for the Amaravati region. This funding aims to accelerate the development of the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh, which has been a focal point of regional growth and urban planning.

The government has also reaffirmed its full commitment to the completion and financing of the Polavaram project, a critical undertaking designed to enhance India's food security. The Polavaram project, a multipurpose irrigation scheme, is expected to significantly improve agricultural productivity by ensuring reliable water supply across the region.

In addition to these major projects, the government is investing in the development of key industrial corridors to stimulate economic growth and connectivity. The Vizag-Chennai and Orvakallu-Bangalore Industrial Corridors will be developed to facilitate industrial expansion, enhance trade routes, and create job opportunities across these vital regions.

Furthermore, targeted funding will be directed towards the backward districts of Rayalaseema, Prakasam, and Nellore. This financial support aims to address regional disparities by promoting economic development and improving infrastructure in these less developed areas.
