BJP Central Team in Kolkata to Review Alleged Post-Poll Violence in West Bengal
A four-member central team from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including senior leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and Biplab Kumar Deb, arrived in West Bengal on a critical two-day visit. Their mission was to assess the situation following allegations of violence against BJP workers in the aftermath of the Lok Sabha elections. The delegation's arrival on Sunday evening marks a significant moment of scrutiny into the state's post-poll environment.

The team engaged with individuals who have allegedly been victims of post-election violence, providing them with shelter near the party's state headquarters. Ravi Shankar Prasad, a Lok Sabha MP and former Union minister, voiced concerns over the fear and apprehension among the people of West Bengal, including BJP workers, regarding the ongoing violence. He highlighted that such incidents of violence following the elections were unique to West Bengal, posing a challenge to democratic norms in the state.
Biplab Kumar Deb, a former chief minister of Tripura and an MP, underscored the severity of the situation by claiming that nearly 10,000 BJP workers had been forced to flee their homes due to alleged violence and intimidation. Deb emphasized the party's commitment to democracy and its resolve to support its workers in West Bengal.
The delegation also met with alleged victims at Maheswari Bhawan, where they had taken refuge. These individuals, hailing from various parts of south Bengal, shared their experiences of violence and intimidation with the team members. In response to these testimonies, Prasad announced that the BJP's legal cell would approach the Calcutta High Court seeking protection for these individuals, ensuring their safe return home.
Amidst these discussions, an incident involving a bomb scare near Maheswari Bhawan was reported. However, it was later confirmed by Kolkata Police that the suspicious object was not a bomb. This incident was mentioned by Prasad as an attempt to intimidate but asserted that such tactics would not deter their mission.
Contrary to these allegations, TMC spokesperson Jaiprakash Majumdar refuted claims of post-poll violence against BJP supporters, labeling them as fabricated. The BJP has alleged that its workers and supporters have been subjected to violence and intimidation by supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) following the Lok Sabha elections. In these elections, the BJP secured 12 out of 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal, while TMC won 29 seats.
The visit by the BJP delegation comes against a backdrop of earlier protests in Sandeshkhali over alleged sexual atrocities and land grabbing by local TMC functionaries. These allegations have been dismissed by TMC leadership as being politically motivated. The situation in West Bengal remains tense as political parties navigate through these allegations and counter-allegations in the aftermath of a contentious election period.
