Lucknow, Jan 16: In Hindu mythology, Ramayana, the character of Ravana, the king of Lanka, is shown as a demon who committed the crime of kidnapping Sita. Ram punished Ravana for kidnapping his wife by killing him and destroying his kingdom.

In general, Ravana is considered as a "villain" in the country, but there are communities which worship the ten-headed demon king for his valour and scholarly pursuits.

In popular parlance, anyone being compared to Ravana is considered as an insult. On Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly protested against posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi shown in Ravana avatar in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP blamed that the "poorly-tasted" posters of the PM were handiworks of the opposition Congress. Moreover, the posters appeared in Amethi, the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, which further fueled the doubts of BJP leaders that the grand old party was behind the "insulting" act.

The BJP demanded an apology from Rahul for Modi posters appearing in his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi which "denigrated" PM Modi.

Senior BJP leader and UP cabinet minister Shrikant Sharma said Rahul must apologise before the entire nation for the "insulting poster."

In a statement, Sharma claimed, "It is at the behest of Rahul that his sycophants had shown the PM as Ravana in the poster. The Congress is intolerant towards Modiji. Former Congress president (Sonia Gandhi) had called Modiji "maut ka saudagar" (merchant of death)".

The posters had claimed that Rahul will usher in Ram Rajya in the country.

Taking a dig at the Congress chief, Sharma said that Rahul was suffering from attention seeking disorder, and was disappointed by the continuous shrinking mandate and electoral defeats.

"In this disappointment, he has forgotten the difference between national interest and national disinterest. In every talk, he is trying to search an opportunity to attack Modiji. Hence, even during his foreign visits, he ridicules the country," Sharma said.

Targeting the Congress chief further, Sharma said Rahul was unable to see the development work being carried out.

"Actually, he is viewing development through Italian glasses. Hence, he is unable to see the benefits of the schemes of PM Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reaching the masses," Sharma said.

The minister claimed that Rahul's first visit to UP as Congress chief had proved to be a flop show.

"And in this frustration, his agitated party workers and Mughal-mindset public representatives unleashed anarchy, which was witnessed by the entire country on news channels," Sharma said.

On Monday, Rahul visited Amethi for the first time as the Congress president. Reports say, Rahul is trying his best to revive the Congress' prospect in UP and thus his visit to Amethi holds great meaning.

Rahul's two-day visit to Amethi also saw clashes between the BJP and Congress workers on Monday. Yogi advised Rahul to focus on development and shun negative politics.
