Leaders Extend Wishes for Bengali New Year, Emphasizing Prosperity and Health

On the auspicious occasion of Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended their heartfelt wishes to the people of West Bengal. Celebrated with fervor across the state and by Bengalis worldwide, this day marks the beginning of new aspirations and hopes. Prime Minister Modi, through a post on his X handle, expressed his desire for the year to bring prosperity, joy, and peace to everyone's lives. His message, adorned with images of 'mangal ghat' and 'kulo', traditional items associated with the festivities, was presented in both Bengali and English to reach a wider audience.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also took to X to share her greetings, invoking Rabindranath Tagore's iconic "Banglar Mati Banglar Jol", the state anthem of West Bengal. She highlighted the day's significance in promoting Bengal's rich heritage, culture, and spirit of brotherhood. Banerjee's posts emphasized her wish for peace, amity, brotherhood, and love among the diverse communities of the state. Amid her poll campaign in north Bengal, she participated in New Year celebrations by dancing to traditional tribal drum beats and walking over 2 km from Chalsa Tiabon to Mangalbarri-Chalsa Golai, greeted by conch shells' sounds and petal showers.

The Chief Minister also paid homage to B.R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary during the celebrations. Across West Bengal, 'prabhat pheris' or morning cultural processions became a spectacle of unity and joy as people dressed in traditional attire sang Tagore songs and walked together. In Kanthi, Purba Medinipur district, a notable procession saw participation from political figures like Suvendu Adhikari and Soumendu Adhikari of the BJP, alongside MLA Arup Das and thousands of citizens. The procession was marked by traditional Bengali handicrafts and vibrant dances to folk music.

Political leaders from various constituencies, including BJP's Tapas Roy from Kolkata Uttar and TMC's Sougata Roy from Dumdum, joined in the New Year processions in their areas, extending their wishes to the public. The festive spirit also boosted local businesses as customers flocked to jewellery and garment shops and indulged in Bengali cuisine at specialty restaurants offering delectable dishes.

The celebration of Poila Baisakh not only signifies the start of a new year but also reflects the unity and cultural vibrancy of West Bengal. It serves as a reminder of the state's glorious traditions and the shared hope for a year filled with happiness and prosperity.
