Bharathiraja Death News: Tamil Cinema Mourns Loss Of Ace Filmmaker

Bharathiraja Death News: Veteran Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja is no more between us. Bharathiraja passed away on Wednesday. He was 84 years old. He died at his residence in Chennai following long illness and age-related complications.

The Tamil Film Producers Council confirmed the news. They issued a public statement regarding his death. He was a former president of the council. He was also a senior member of the association. They expressed regret over the loss.

Actor and politician Khushbu Sundar shared her grief. She wrote about the loss on X. She called him a legendary director. She said his films act as a school for filmmakers. She added that she would truly miss him.

The filmmaker struggled with health issues recently. He was hospitalised last December for respiratory issues. He returned to hospital earlier this year for care. Doctors eventually discharged him in April.

A long career in cinema

He directed many landmark movies. Highlights include 16 Vayathinile and Sigappu Rojakkal. He also made Kizhakke Pogum Rail and Nizhalgal. His list also includes Alaigal Oivathillai and Tik Tik Tik. He also directed Oru Kaidhiyin Diary and Mudhal Mariyathai. He also filmed the popular Kizhakku Cheemayile. He worked with Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. He also worked with Sivaji Ganesan.

His last directorial venture was in 2023. It was a segment for Modern Love Chennai. He also featured as an actor recently. He appeared in films like Thiruchitrambalam and Maharaja. His final screen appearance was in Thudarum. It was released in 2025.

Bharathiraja is survived by his wife, Chandraleela. He is also survived by his daughter, Janani. His son, Manoj Bharathiraja, passed away in 2025. His family grieves the loss.
