29 Celebs, One Scam: ED Names Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati In Betting App Probe
Tollywood actors Vijay Deverakonda and Rana Daggubati are among 29 notable figures arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a huge betting app fraud, officials announced Thursday. The case arises from a FIR filed by Hyderabad's Cyberabad Police in response to a complaint by businessman Phanindra Sarma.
Other celebrities named in the case include Prakash Raj, Manchu Lakshmi, Nidhhi Agerwal, Ananya Nagalla, and Srimukhi. These actors and influencers allegedly promoted illegal betting apps through advertisements and social media endorsements, misleading users into believing the platforms were legal and secure.

ED's Case and Legal Framework
The ED's investigation is based on the FIR filed under the Telangana Gaming Act, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 66(D) of the IT Act. Proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) are also underway. Officials are scrutinizing financial transactions to trace the flow of money from these endorsements and uncover any links to larger networks of digital betting scams.
Fallout in the Entertainment Industry
The development has sparked serious concern within the film and influencer community. Industry bodies have called for greater caution among celebrities when associating with brands or platforms, particularly those operating in legal grey areas.
The ED's probe forms part of a larger, nationwide crackdown on illegal betting apps and online gambling platforms. Authorities estimate that the scam has caused financial damage running into several crores, impacting thousands of users.
More developments are expected as the investigation unfolds.
