Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Red, Orange, And Yellow Alerts Across 19 Districts
The Regional Meteorological Department (RMD) has issued alerts across Tamil Nadu, with three districts under a red alert and five under an orange alert.
A red alert signifies imminent severe weather conditions that could disrupt transportation and power supply, posing risks to life. On the other hand, an orange alert indicates extremely adverse weather conditions affecting transportation by rail, road, and air.

The statement from the RMC forecasts isolated heavy to very heavy rain in districts like Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram, with the possibility of extremely heavy rain in certain areas. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated locations of districts such as Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Sivaganga, and Tiruvarur.
The agency has also issued a yellow alert to several other districts and the Karaikal area, indicating expected rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, signaling a deterioration in current adverse weather conditions.
"Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts and Karaikal area," the statement added.
In the 24 hours ending at 08:30 IST today, maximum temperatures remained mostly normal across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with some areas experiencing temperatures below normal. The highest maximum temperature of 39.2°C was recorded in Erode. Across the plains of interior Tamil Nadu, temperatures ranged from 35-39°C, while coastal areas recorded temperatures between 32°C and 35°C, and hilly regions registered temperatures between 21°C and 26°C. Chennai (MBK) and Chennai (NBK) both recorded below-normal maximum temperatures, with MBK at 36.0°C (-2.4°C) and NBK at 35.2°C (-2.2°C).
These Districts Are Predicted To Get Rains Today
According to the RMD, light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, is expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Also, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted in isolated areas of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, and Theni districts.
Heavy rain is also anticipated in isolated spots in Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Madurai, Dindigul, Pudukkottai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Erode districts, as well as the Karaikal area.
