Namma Metro Purple Line: New CRRC Prototype Train To Help Tackle Overcrowding

The arrival of the prototype train from China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) for Bengaluru's Purple Line marks a significant step in addressing the city's public transport challenges. The Namma Metro Purple Line spans 43.49 km, connecting Challaghatta to Whitefield.

Transported from Shanghai Port to Chennai Port before reaching Bengaluru's Peenya depot on January 13, this development is set to alleviate the pressure caused by overcrowded trains along the 43-km stretch of the Namma Metro Purple Line and the Green Line.

The prototype, which is a critical addition to the Bengaluru Metro's fleet, is undergoing a comprehensive six-month trial to ensure its readiness for operational duties.

Namma Metro Purple Line Trial Phase of CRRC Prototype Train Begins At Peenya Depot

CRRC's partnership with Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) signifies a move towards boosting local manufacturing in line with the Indian government's Make in India initiative. This collaboration aims to produce train sets domestically, enhancing the country's self-reliance in metro train manufacturing. The prototype's trial phase includes a series of tests-static, electrical circuit, and dynamic assessments on the mainline-to validate its performance and safety standards. Before it can serve the Purple Line, the train must receive approvals from both the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

In December 2019, CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co. was awarded a contract to supply 216 coaches within 173 weeks, aimed at bolstering the metro lines in Bengaluru. The contract details the provision of 126 coaches for the Purple and Green Lines and 90 coaches for the Yellow Line, with the first of the remaining 20 six-coach DTG trains expected to be manufactured at TRSL's facility in Uttarpara, Kolkata by the fourth quarter of 2025. These trains, designed similarly to the Yellow Line CBTC trains, will feature modern amenities such as real-time location updates and dynamic route maps displayed on LCD screens across doors and gangway panels.

Despite the expansion of Bengaluru's metro network to 76.9 km, the current operation of only 57 trains falls short of the ideal one train per km to maintain a three to four-minute frequency. This shortfall has led to an average daily ridership of 7.8 lakh passengers, putting a strain on the capacity and efficiency of the metro service. The challenge of testing the DTG prototype is compounded by limited nighttime slots available, given the operational status of the Purple and Green Lines. This situation underscores the need for a swift and effective integration of the new trains into the system to better serve Bengaluru's growing commuter base.

As experts suggest, Bengaluru Metro's ability to meet the expected frequency and capacity requirements hinges on the successful deployment of these additional trains. With the full complement of 21 DTG trains expected for the Namma Metro Purple and Green Lines by the first quarter of 2027, the city's metro system is on course for a significant upgrade. This will not only improve the daily commute for millions of passengers but also set a precedent for the future expansion and modernization of urban transportation in India.
