Andhra Pradesh: Record-Breaking Price For Chicken At Rs 1,11,111 - Know Why

In Andhra Pradesh, a southern state, a staggering figure of Rs 1 lakh 11 thousand has been recorded as the price for a single chicken. This unprecedented price point marks a first in the state's history, raising eyebrows and prompting questions about the causes behind such a hike. Traditionally, chickens in India are sold for far less, often not exceeding a few hundred rupees, making this new price point a significant deviation from the norm.

The surge in chicken prices is directly linked to the popularity of chicken fights in the region, an event that draws significant attention and participation. Notably, a recent event saw an astonishing bet of Rs 1 crore placed on a fight between two chickens, with the victorious chicken's owner claiming the entire sum as a prize. This tradition of chicken fighting is not only a longstanding one in Andhra Pradesh but also a crowd-puller, featuring large gatherings and considerable fanfare.

During these events, the chickens involved are sold at auctions for lakhs of rupees, a practice that significantly contributes to their high price. In a remarkable instance, an individual from Eluru acquired a chicken for Rs 111,111 at an auction. These auctions are typically held during the Sankranti festival in the Godavari district, underlining the cultural significance of chicken fighting in the region.

The chickens prepared for these fights receive specialized care and diet for five months leading up to the event, including a mix of minced eggs, chicken, mutton, almonds, and cashews. This diet is designed to strengthen the chickens, making them more formidable opponents in the fights. Following their death in battle, the chickens are referred to as 'Koja' and are highly sought after for their meat, which is believed to be tastier than that of regular chickens. This demand contributes to the high auction prices, with the meat of these chickens fetching between Rs 1,000 to Rs 23,000 per kg.

However, it's noteworthy that the meat from these fights, especially from the chickens that do not survive, holds value as well. Dubbed 'Koja' after their demise in the arena, these chickens' meat is considered a delicacy, reputed to be more flavorful than that of their non-combatant counterparts. This perception has led to the meat being sold for thousands of rupees per kilogram, with prices ranging from Rs 1,000 to as much as Rs 23,000.

The phenomenon of chicken fights and the subsequent auctioning of the chickens, both alive and deceased, underscores a unique cultural practice within Andhra Pradesh that significantly impacts the local economy and the valuation of chickens. This event, steeped in tradition, not only serves as entertainment but also as a lucrative opportunity for participants and spectators alike.
