Wild Chicken In Menu! Himachal CM Sukhu Faces Criticism, Issues Clarification

Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu landed in a soup on Satuday after attending an event in Shimla. The dinner menu reportedly featured 'wild chicken,' a species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. This revelation sparked outrage among animal rights activists and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who are demanding accountability and action against those involved.

The event took place in Shimla's remote Kufri area, where CM Sukhu was present. The dinner included dishes such as wild chicken, bichu booti (a local herb), and maize and wheat bread. Although CM Sukhu did not eat the wild chicken, it was served to the state's Health Minister and other attendees, raising concerns about illegal hunting practices.

Political Reactions and Demands for Accountability

The incident quickly gained traction on social media platforms, with both animal welfare organisations and political figures calling for accountability. BJP state spokesperson Chetan Bharta insisted that CM Sukhu should publicly apologise and ensure strict measures are taken against those responsible for serving the wild chicken.

Former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur also expressed his disapproval, labelling the incident as unacceptable. He urged the government to address this issue promptly. "While the government claims to address people's grievances through outreach programs like Jan Manch, they are now indulging in picnics," said Jairam Thakur.

Reacting to Jairam Thakur's allegations, CM Sukhu said he stopped eating non-veg a long time ago. It was locals love that brought him to the event and he was not aware that "wild chicken" was being served there. He added that BJP leaders are making issue out of nothing.

Legal Implications of Serving Protected Species

The wild chicken in question is found at altitudes above 3,000 feet in Himachal Pradesh. It is legally protected, making its hunting a punishable offence. The incident has highlighted concerns about wildlife protection laws being violated at official events.
