Brit cops to use txt mssgs to switch off getaway cars' engines!
London, Jan 23 (ANI): The use of mobile phone is getting bizarre day by day, for after coming handy in tracking cheating partners, Brit cops could now be using them to send text messages to switch off the engines of getaway cars.
From what the results of trials being carried out by the Home Office suggest, police officials can be given power to stop cars remotely. In a bid to cut the number of high speed car chases, which have led to the deaths of officers and civilians, the Home Office has asked companies to come up with schemes for "vehicle stopping technology" enabling officers to stop stolen and getaway cars.
"If new technology can help police stop vehicles more safely and more effectively then it is right that we look at all the options carefully," The Telegraph quoted the Home Office as saying.
They added: "We have asked companies to propose possible electronic solutions and we will be in a position to say more once all the options have been properly tested and fully evaluated."
The Police Review has said that it's possible to include "intelligent transport systems", commercially available technology that can help owners to use a mobile phone to regain control of their cars if they get stolen.
The new tracking system makes use of satellite navigation to locate a car, whose position is shown on a website.
And the car, which is also fitted with a receiver, can also receive text messages.
In case the car is stolen, the owner or a company acting on his or her behalf, can send instructions to the car's on-board computer via a simple text message.
In fact, text messages can even switch on the headlights, sound the horn, slow the car down or - if it is stopped - immobilise it completely.
The Police Review claimed that the officers would welcome access to the technology as an alternative to current devices such as "stingers," that spikes into the path of the car, which burst the tyres. (ANI)
