Bush visit to highlight human rights in Myanmar

Bangkok, Aug 6 (UNI) US President George W Bush arrives in the Thai capital today for a two-day visit during which he will meet Thailand-based Myanmar dissidents.

Mr Bush will be in Bangkok on his way to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in the Chinese capital this Friday.

The US President will meet Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej this evening and deliver a speech on US policy in East Asia tomorrow.

He will then have a luncheon meeting with a group of Myanmarese pro-democracy activists living in Thailand.

US First Lady Laura Bush, a vocal supporter of human rights in Myanmar, will visit a health clinic run by a Myanmar dissident doctor in Mae Sot district on the Thailand-Myanmar border.

Thai Foreign Minister Tej Bunnag said today Thailand adheres to a policy of non-interference in Myanmar's internal affairs.

Bangkok was ready to work multilaterally as part of the Southeast Asian nations' grouping of which Myanmar is a member, to help find a way of promoting national reconciliation in Myanmar, he added.
