Lucknow Airport renamed as Ch. Charan Singh Airport: Cabinet

New Delhi, July 17 (UNI) Lucknow Airport will now be known as Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport.

The proposal for renaming the airport was approved at the weekly Cabinet meeting today, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said.

''This decision will honour the sentiments of the people. It will also be a befitting tribute to the seventh Prime Minister who was also a freedom fighter and farmers' leader,'' the Minister said.

He denied suggestions that the renaming was done following pressure from RLD chief Ajit Singh, son of the late leader, whose support is crucial for the survival of the UPA government at the time of the trust vote in the Lok Sabha on July 22.
