MCD's decision to privatise waste collection opposed
New Delhi, Jun 17(UNI) The All India Kabadi Mazdoor Mahasangh (AIKMM) today protested MCD's decision to privatise waste collection and contracting it to private companies and Multinational corporations (MNCs).
At a conference organised at the Constitution Club here, about 300 worker leaders, representing 3.5 lakh waste collectors in Delhi, also demanded formulation and adoption of a comprehensive legislation for protecting employment opportunities and imparting education to their children.
Speaking at the conference, which saw participation from representatives of Alliance of People's Right and Worker's Solidarity Centre(WSC), AIKMM, General Secretary, Shashi B. Pandit, demanded an upliftment in their status in the society.
The Speakers also urged the society to recognise the waste collectors in society.
''Police should not harass us and society should give us equal status,''a panelist said.
The AIKMM plans to protest in front of the MCD Office on August 9 to press their demands.
