Economy shining, but poor suffering: Yechuri
Bangalore, Apr 21 (UNI) CPI(M) Politburo Member Sitaram Yehuri today said the country was shining because of 'liberalisation' and it boasted of having 36 billionaires but on the flip side, the poor were becoming poorer due to inflation.
Speaking to reporters here, he said 36 individuals were holding 25 per cent of country's GDP while a major percentage of the people were earning only Rs 20 or less a day.
''It is necessary to bridge this gap to make India prosper,'' he added.
The Left parties had urged the UPA Government to ban future and forward trading since it had led to inflation.
On Ram Sethu, the CPI (M) leader said it was the BJP-led NDA Government and Ms Uma Bharti, the then Minister, who cleared the project. Now since the BJP was out of power, it was giving every issue a communal colour.
''This is the worst type of politics and nothing but vote bank politics,'' he charged.
