Significance of this Survey
There were two road accidents in Bengaluru on 6 October 2021. In the first, a 17-year-old girl and in the second a sub-inspector of the excise department died. In both incidents, the vehicles skidded when the drivers were trying to avoid the huge potholes on the road. In the first accident, a truck coming from behind trampled her and she died on the spot, the second accident happened during the night, when a lorry passed over the sub-inspector. Such accidents continue unabated across the country. Who do you hold responsible for these day-to-day deaths?
  • Death statistics in road accidents caused by potholes
    In 2019, in response to a question asked in the Rajya Sabha, the government presented shocking figures. According to the government, in the year 2018, the reason for the death of more than 2 thousand people across the country was due to potholes on the road. In the same period of time, 3597 people lost their lives in 2017. The figures after that have not been released in the public domain at the moment, but yes, let us tell you that in December 2018, the government was strongly reprimanded in this context in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had said, "The death of 15,000 people in five years is a very serious matter. This figure is more than the number of deaths due to terror incidents on the border."
  • What does the report of a private organization say on potholes?
    According to a report released by Save Life Foundation in 2018, there were 38,105 road accidents across the country due to potholes from 2013 to 2016. Of these, 34,421 people suffered serious injuries, while 11,386 people died. In 2016, a maximum of 1,436 deaths occurred in Uttar Pradesh, while 1064 people lost their lives in Maharashtra. Tamil Nadu (621) was at number three and Madhya Pradesh (609) was at number four.
