As the Paris Olympics 2024 approaches, the global spotlight is on the United States and China, with the USA projected to lead in the overall medal count and China aiming to secure more gold medals.

However, the spotlight is also on India's table tennis team, which is set to make history with its first-ever qualification for team events.

Paris Olympics 2024: Who's In For Table Tennis?

Table tennis, though not traditionally a dominant sport for India, is seeing a rise in competitive performance. Historically, India has struggled to make an impact in this sport, often overshadowed by powerhouses like China, Japan, and South Korea. However, recent improvements signal a hopeful future for Indian paddlers, as reported by First Post.

India's journey in table tennis has been marked by gradual progress. Until 2014, the country had not won any medals at the Asian Games. The breakthrough came in Jakarta 2018, with medals in men's doubles and mixed doubles. Last year's Hangzhou Asiad further saw Suthirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee clinch India's first women's doubles medal at the continental level.

Can India Secure A Medal?

The Paris Olympics will mark a significant milestone as India's table tennis team competes in the team events for the first time since the category's introduction in Beijing 2008. Previously, Indian paddlers had participated in every Olympic edition since table tennis was introduced in Seoul in 1988 but had only advanced past the preliminary rounds on a few occasions, as reported by Sports star.

The 2024 Games will feature a larger and historically significant Indian contingent, with six athletes-three men and three women-along with one reserve player for each gender. The men's team comprises Achanta Sharath Kamal, Manav Thakkar, and Harmeet Desai, with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran as the reserve.

Kamal, the top-ranked Indian (40th), will make his fifth and final Olympic appearance and is set to be the flag-bearer for India. The women's team includes Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, and Archana Kamath, with Ayhika Mukherjee as the reserve. Despite the historic qualification, the path to a medal remains challenging.

India has yet to win an Olympic table tennis medal, and the competition remains fierce with dominant nations like China and Japan. The best previous performances came in Tokyo 2020, where both Kamal and Batra reached the third round in their respective singles events and advanced to the Round of 16 in mixed doubles, as reported by Sports star.

Manika Batra, who recently reached the quarter-finals of the Saudi Smash, is optimistic about India's chances. "India's qualification is a huge achievement. We are working hard and have a realistic shot at a medal," Batra said.

The table tennis events at the Paris Olympics will run from July 27 to August 10, with singles finals scheduled for August 3 and 4, and team events concluding on August 10, as per media reports. As India's paddlers prepare for this historic opportunity, hopes are high for a strong showing on the Olympic stage.
