ICC Champions Trophy 2025: India vs Pakistan Matches Heads To UAE On February 23
In a pivotal move, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has resolved the longstanding issue of hosting rights for the Champions Trophy 2025, with Pakistan and a neutral venue, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), selected as the sites for the tournament. This decision marks the first significant act under Jay Shah's leadership and introduces a hybrid hosting model for ICC events in the 2024-27 cycle, aimed at accommodating the complex political dynamics between India and Pakistan. Since 2008, India has refrained from touring Pakistan due to strained relations, making this adjustment a critical step in ensuring the participation of all competing countries.
The UAE's selection as a neutral venue highlights the diplomatic and logistical efforts to ensure a smooth conduct of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, especially for matches involving India and Pakistan. This decision follows a series of discussions, notably between PCB chairperson Mohsin Naqvi and senior UAE minister Sheikh Nahyan Al Mubarak, emphasizing the importance of neutrality in venues for sensitive matches. This arrangement underscores a forward-looking approach to cricket diplomacy and tournament planning.

The Champions Trophy 2025 Schedule and Format
India's campaign in the upcoming tournament will feature high-stakes matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand, in addition to the much-anticipated clash with Pakistan. Scheduled for a Sunday, February 23, the match against Pakistan is poised to be a highlight of the tournament, with India facing Bangladesh on February 20 and New Zealand on March 2. All of India's group matches are expected to take place in Dubai, underscoring the UAE's role as a crucial venue for the competition.
Pakistan, the defending champions, will initiate the tournament with a match against New Zealand in Karachi on February 19, wrapping up their league stage against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on February 27. The tournament's structure also includes a second group comprising Afghanistan, Australia, England, and South Africa, with matches spread across Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. The semifinals are scheduled for March 4 and 5, with the final on March 9, featuring a reserve day to ensure the match's completion.
India-Pakistan Matches at Neutral Venues
The ICC's decision to hold India-Pakistan matches at neutral venues for ICC events hosted by India or Pakistan from 2024 to 2027 highlights the governing body's commitment to ensuring fair competition and addressing geopolitical concerns. This policy, applicable to the Men's Champions Trophy 2025, the Women's Cricket World Cup 2025, and the Men's T20 World Cup 2026, reflects a pragmatic approach to organizing international cricket events amid challenging international relations.
The ICC statement from December 19 outlined this policy, emphasizing the necessity of neutral venues for matches between the two arch-rivals during the current rights cycle. This decision aims to maintain the spirit of competition while acknowledging the realities of the geopolitical landscape affecting the sport.
Future Hosting Rights and Tournament Expansion
Looking ahead, the PCB has been granted the hosting rights for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in 2028, with the understanding that neutral venues will also be utilized. This allocation is part of a broader strategy to diversify the locations of ICC events, with Cricket Australia awarded hosting rights for a senior ICC women's event between 2029 and 2031. The Champions Trophy 2025, featuring eight teams including Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, and South Africa, alongside hosts Pakistan, promises to be a landmark event in cricket's calendar, showcasing the sport's global appeal and the ICC's commitment to inclusive, geopolitically sensitive tournament planning.
