Pakistan Army Plans Return To Bangladesh After Five Decades

The Pakistan Army is reportedly planning a return to Bangladesh after more than five decades. Senior military figures, including a general, are expected to visit soon. In 1971, the Pakistani Army was expelled from East Pakistan. General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chairman of Pakistan's Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, has proposed visiting Bangladesh's military training facilities and addressing young officers.

Bangladesh has accepted this proposal, with initial talks already underway. However, specific dates for the visit remain unconfirmed. This development marks a significant shift in Bangladesh-Pakistan relations since Sheikh Hasina's removal from power and Muhammad Yunus assuming leadership.

Strengthening Military Ties

Under Yunus's interim government, Bangladesh is moving closer to Pakistan. In 2022, Sheikh Hasina denied docking permission for the Pakistani warship PNS Taimur at Chittagong. Now, reports indicate that Bangladesh plans to conduct a joint naval exercise with Pakistan in the Bay of Bengal.

Bangladesh is also set to join the multinational naval exercise AMAN 2025 in Karachi from February 7 to February 11. Defense Expert Major General Ashok Kumar (Retd.) commented on these developments: "The current government's affinity for Pakistan is increasing with each passing day. Pakistani diplomats and heads of military institutions are expressing their desire for closer relations with Bangladesh. This is likely to pose a challenge for India."

Economic and Diplomatic Developments

Direct flights between Islamabad and Dhaka have resumed after a five-year hiatus. Additionally, Bangladesh has relaxed visa requirements for Pakistani nationals. Mohammad Yunus's government has invited Pakistan to participate in a trade exhibition in January.

Cargo ships from Pakistan will dock directly at Chittagong port without inspection of goods. Defense expert Major General Ashok Kumar (Retd.) noted: "Earlier, the ISI carried out its activities in Bangladesh covertly. Now, under the current government, it will openly engage in anti-India activities."

Historical Context and Future Implications

The Pakistani Jamaat played a crucial role in overthrowing Sheikh Hasina's government, escalating tensions with India. Now, Pakistan seems to be re-establishing its influence over Bangladesh. The growing strategic ties between these nations could present challenges for India.

Bangladesh's participation in AMAN 2025 and joint naval exercises indicates strengthening military cooperation with Pakistan. As diplomatic and economic ties deepen under Yunus's leadership, India's regional strategy may need reassessment.
