CSK Sign Dewald Brevis To Add Firepower To Dhoni-Led Team's Lacklustre Middle Order

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have welcomed a fresh addition to their squad-one with IPL experience, youth, and the firepower needed to bolster their middle-order batting.

With just two wins from seven matches, CSK currently sit at the bottom of the 10-team IPL 2025 table.

Apart from Rachin Ravindra and, to an extent, Shivam Dube, their batting line-up has largely underperformed. Though MS Dhoni has offered some late-innings fireworks, the team has lacked consistency and stability in the middle. Enter Dewald Brevis.

Following an injury to pacer Gurjapneet Singh, CSK have signed 21-year-old South African batter Dewald Brevis as his replacement.

"Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa's Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Dewald Brevis has featured in 81 T20 matches, scoring 1,787 runs, including a highest score of 162. He debuted in T20 Internationals for South Africa in 2023 and has represented them in two matches. Previously part of the Mumbai Indians (MI), he played 10 games. He joins CSK for INR 2.2 crore," the IPL said in a statement.

Brevis shot to prominence by scoring 506 runs in the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, setting a record for the most runs in a single edition of the tournament.

He is also the youngest South African to notch a century in men's T20s. In a sensational knock of 162 for the Titans against the Knights during the CSA T20 Challenge, he reached 150 in just 52 deliveries-the fastest in T20 history.

Nicknamed 'Baby AB' due to his striking resemblance in batting style to AB de Villiers, Brevis has made waves across multiple leagues including the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Major League Cricket (MLC), and the SA20. He was the sixth-highest run-scorer in SA20, racking up 291 runs at an explosive strike rate of 184.17, helping MI Cape Town secure their maiden title.

Earlier, CSK had also brought in Ayush Mhatre, a promising Mumbai and India U19 batter, as a replacement for injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was sidelined due to a fractured elbow. Speculation surrounding Brevis' potential CSK stint intensified after he posted a cryptic yellow-themed image on Instagram on Friday afternoon.
