Bridge Over Mithi River Rebuilt Overnight: Western Railway Completes Major Task
Western Railway has completed the reconstruction of bridge number 20, located on the Mithi River between Bandra and Mahim stations. The work was carried out during a block of more than eight hours on the night between April 11 and 12.
This was the last screw bridge on this railway route. After the reconstruction, the bridge is now stronger and safer for trains. According to officials, the rebuilding work was a major task and involved detailed planning and teamwork.

One of the biggest challenges was the location of the bridge. The site is surrounded by tidal water on both the east and west sides of the Mithi River. There is no direct road to the bridge, so heavy machinery and materials had to be brought in by blocking three stabling lines.
The reconstruction work included removing the old pillars and girders and replacing them with new ones. A railway official said that the tender for this bridge project was invited in March 2023 using the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) method.
The project required the use of large machines and a big team of workers. A 700-metric-ton crane was used, along with one standby crane. Other equipment included 10 dumpers, a bulldozer, two JCBs, a tapping machine, two tower wagons, and 10 BRNs (bogie rail wagons). Around 150 workers were involved in the successful completion of the project.
Western Railway has said this newly rebuilt bridge will improve safety and train movement in the area. The railway authorities thanked all the workers and departments involved in making the work a success within the given time.
