Brake Failure Or Chaos? Mumbai's Deadly BEST Bus Crash Leaves 7 Dead, 43 Injured
On the night of Monday, December 9, a tragic accident involving a BEST bus travelling on route 332 in Mumbai's Kurla area resulted in the deaths of at least seven people and left 43 others injured.
The crash, which took place on S.G. Barve Road near the White House building, involved the bus striking multiple vehicles and pedestrians before it finally crashed into a gate at Ambedkar Nagar, as reported by Times Of India.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and panic-inducing, comparing the incident to a terror attack. The victims of the fatal crash have been identified as Shivam Kashyap (18), Kaniz Fatima (55), Afeel Shah (19), and Anam Sheikh (20). Three additional victims have yet to be identified. The severity of the accident has left many injured, with several in critical condition, and authorities have warned that the number of fatalities may rise.

The Cause of the Crash: Brake Failure or Negligence?
While initial reports suggest that the cause of the crash may have been brake failure, the authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to verify this claim. The bus driver, 43-year-old Sanjay More, was taken into custody and has stated that faulty brakes led to the collision. He explained that he lost control of the bus after the brakes failed, causing it to strike five to six autorickshaws, 10 motorcycles, and multiple pedestrians in its path before it crashed into the gate of Ambedkar Nagar.

The Mumbai Police and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) have launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash, with experts examining the bus to determine if a mechanical failure or driver negligence was responsible. Ravi Gaikwad, the chief of the Regional Transport Office, confirmed that specialists are reviewing the vehicle's condition to assess whether technical issues, such as a brake malfunction, contributed to the deadly incident.
Eyewitness Accounts of Chaos and Panic
Eyewitnesses have described the scene of the accident as one of absolute chaos, with the bus crashing into vehicles and pedestrians in a rapid sequence, leaving people in a state of panic and confusion. "It felt like a terror attack," said one local, describing the events as the bus struck cars, autorickshaws, and people. One eyewitness, Zaid Ahmed, mentioned that his car was pushed for nearly 100 meters by the fast-moving bus.

The bus continued its path of destruction until it finally came to a halt after crashing into the gate of Ambedkar Nagar. The panic-stricken crowd quickly surrounded the bus and apprehended the driver, who was later handed over to the police.

Authorities Respond and Investigate
In response to the tragedy, the Mumbai Police and BEST officials have launched a full investigation into the incident. While the driver has claimed that brake failure caused the crash, transport authorities are investigating whether other factors, including possible driver negligence, contributed to the deadly outcome. A team of specialists from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) is helping the police determine whether a mechanical failure, faulty brakes, or human error were at fault.
In the aftermath, a large crowd gathered at the scene, prompting the deployment of Mumbai's Quick Response Team (QRT) and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) to maintain order and assist with rescue operations.

Ongoing Investigation and Concern Over Public Safety
As the investigation unfolds, the incident raises important questions about the safety protocols in place for Mumbai's public transport system, particularly with regard to ensuring that buses are properly maintained and drivers are held accountable for their actions. The devastating impact of this crash has sparked concerns over safety and the need for tighter regulations on public transportation in the city.
With the number of injured still high and the cause of the crash under investigation, this tragedy has left the community grappling with its aftermath. The authorities are working to determine whether mechanical failure, driver error, or a combination of both played a role in causing the deadly mishap in Kurla.
