In Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, police detained twelve Muslim men in Mohammadganj village after they were found offering namaz in a vacant house, following complaints from villagers and a circulated video. The men were later granted bail by a magistrate, and authorities are searching for three others, with the police stating the action was to prevent disturbances and that unauthorized religious gatherings are illegal.

Officials said the detention followed complaints from villagers and the circulation of a video on social media that showed a group praying inside the house.

Police act after local complaints

According to officials, residents of Mohammadganj village informed the police that a vacant house was allegedly being used as a "temporary madrasa" for several weeks. Acting on the information, the police reached the spot and stopped the prayer gathering. A video purportedly showing the namaz being offered inside the house was also taken into account during the inquiry, PTI reported citing officials.

Challans issued, bail granted by magistrate

Police said the 12 men were detained as a precautionary measure and issued challans under sections related to breach of peace. They were later produced before a magistrate, who granted them bail. Authorities are also searching for three other individuals who are currently absconding in connection with the case.

Warning against unauthorised religious gatherings

SP (South) Anshika Verma said the action was taken to prevent any disturbance to law and order. "Conducting any new religious activity or gathering without permission is a violation of the law. Strict action will be taken if such activities are repeated," she said, while appealing to people to maintain peace in the area.

Police added that preliminary inquiry showed the vacant house belongs to one Hanif and was being used temporarily for Friday namaz. Officials said no written permission or valid documents were produced when sought by the authorities.

Congress questions police action

The incident drew political reaction, with Congress leader Dr Shama Mohamed questioning the police move. She said, "Uttar Pradesh Police in Bareilly have arrested 12 Muslim people for offering namaz inside their own homes after a video surfaced. On what grounds were they arrested, @bareillypolice? Which law did they violate? Have all criminals in the state been neutralised that the UP Police is now busy terrorising its own citizens for praying inside their homes? (sic)."

Police said objections raised by some villagers over regular prayers being held at the house without permission led to official intervention, and the investigation is continuing.
