J&K Floods: 11 Dead, 7 Missing As Heavy Rain Triggers Flash Floods In Rajouri, Poonch

As the monsoon grips several parts of India, heavy rainfall continued to batter Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday resulting in widespread destruction in the Poonch and Rajouri districts.

The flash floods and landslides have claimed 11 lives while seven people remain missing.
It is due to continuous rain that has led to flooded rivers, damaged roads and several villages cut off. The authorities have launched rescue operations while urging people to stay indoors and avoid flood hit areas.

Rajouri Faces Massive Flooding After Rivers Overflow

Among the affected areas, Rajouri was the worst hit. The relentless rain causes rivers and streams to overflow, flooding several low lying areas. The officials say that the Darhali river breached the flood shielding wall near the Bela Colony and that led to huge volume of water enter the nearby residential areas. The bus stand parking area was completely submerged, causing severe damage to hundreds of parked vehicles.

Apart from the Darhali River, other major rivers, including the Khandli, Suktoh, and Jamola, also swelled to dangerous levels. Many crossed the danger mark, increasing the risk of flooding in nearby villages.

Hundreds of Vehicles Washed Away

The devastation led the vehicles wash away, as according to the locals, hundreds of vehicles parked overnight were either swept away by the flood waters or buried under the mud and debris. Officials state that dozens of vehicles lost are being verified. Residents say that the flood waters entered the parking area in minutes leaving no time to move the vehicles to the safe spot.

Rescue Operations Continue

The emergency team, police personnel and disaster response have been deployed across the impacted regions.

Officials said relief camps are being prepared for families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed in the floods.

The authorities have appealed the residents to avoid unnecessary travel as weather conditions remain dangerous. Residents living in nearby river banks have been asked to stay alert due to ongoing rainfall.

The weather department has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir until July 23, raising concerns that the flood situation could worsen in the coming days.
